The Gold Rush may be over, but panning for gold is still very much alive in California. Deep in the Angeles National Forest, about an hour's drive from L.A., is a group of dedicated "gold diggers" who meticulously examine the San Gabriel River and pan for gold. Even though much of California's gold is gone, many Angelenos believe otherwise. Reporter Judy Muller interviews Bernie McGrath, a prospector who turned his life around after spending years hooked on heroin. McGrath is one of many regulars who work a stretch of the San Gabriel River, patiently gold prospecting with the hopes of finding flakes and nuggets of gold. Prospecting and sampling a site for color in Angeles National Forest, 2/28/10. The idea is to hand pan for the presence of gold before you do any serious digging. 1. Find the gold line (inside curve of stream). 2. Locate a gravel deposit. 3. Dig a sample and classify (screen) to 1/4 inch. 4. Pan it and look for color. I'm at "Pry Bar Gulch" - a small canyon that is dry most of the year. I took advantage of a rainstorm the day before to pan while the small creek was running.
Good day on the river and good gold

These guys are the real deal...prospecting is their passion, and we were blessed to be able to get an inside 'scoop' into this incredible culture. It truly is a lost art . The San Gabriel Mountains have a rich history of prospecting since the beginning of 49er movement in California. Pieces of old mining equipment can still be seen along the local hiking trails of Azusa Canyon and many of the old mines are accessible with a little bit of trekking skill. Anyone looking for a bit of adventure and a good pair of hiking boots can experience the San Gabriels and it's fruitful East Fork River...and it's only 45 minutes from Downtown LA! Loaded with history and personal experience, LA...

I first saw people panning for gold when I went bungee jumping at the Bridge To Nowhere in the San Gabriel Mountains just east of Azusa, CA. The trip was awesome but the one thing that stuck with me was the people panning for gold… and the how insane bungee jumping is. About a year later I wanted to go see if I could find gold my self. I found out there is certainly gold, and a lot of it too!!! This has turned into my new favorite hobby and I go out panning/sluicing for gold every week. I love it so much I started a new youtube channel all about finding gold and other Gems. Here is the link to the new channel called “ModernDayMiners” : https://www.youtube....

California metal detecting: Mexican miners worked the area for decades before Americans entered the district in the late nineteenth century. In this sense it was more characteristic of mineral regions in Arizona and New Mexico that constituted the northern edge of a Hispanic mining frontier extending north from Mexico, which had been developed in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries.
